Announcements: Incoming President Visit

Deborah K. Ultan Boudewyns the incoming ARLIS/NA President was introduced to the group and spoke about the upcoming year. She defined the upcoming year as a year of transition. A final decision on the existence of the VR division (continued existence, changed format, etc. as outlined in the Task Force Recommendations on Restructuring DSRTs) is not required at this time. As a group, she would like for us to brainstorm about what will work best for us and for the organization with regard to the Task Force recommendations.  Ken Soehner, the incoming Vice-President/President Elect of ARLIS/NA added that the following year will be a year of implementation and that ideas and suggestions are very much welcomed.

 ·         Task Force Recommendations on Restructuring DSRTs.

A lively discussion was held regarding the Task Force recommendation on the restructuring of Divisions, Sections, and Round Tables. The Task Force recommendations are meant to make the administration of groups flat and more fluid with the idea that a group could come together and disband once their purpose is accomplished. Comments included:

 · Good idea to restructure - perhaps we are more of an interest group

· Why would someone want to join VRD? Are we currently serving members needs? Will this change better serve member’s interests?

·  There has been little activity with the group during the year. Are we not doing what is needed to contribute to the organization?

· Digital image world is no longer just Visual Resources - not limited to a physical object.

· We can contribute in the area of metadata/item-level image specialization; we need to promote that aspect of VR work.

· Current meeting arrangement schedules interests groups at same time decreasing ability for “cross pollination” with other groups, i.e., Cataloging

· Appropriate communication tools are needed. If we change in structure will we have web space on ARLIS/NA? How would change impact communication?

· We need to focus on images; providing digitization and item-level record metadata.

Conclusion: There is a desire to continue the VR group to promote topics, projects and issues regarding cataloging metadata, access, licensing, etc. As a group we would like to have a certain amount of conference time, such as a presentation or Ask ARLIS table. A new name/identity is needed. One suggestion is Digital Image Resource Think Tank (DIRT). Please think about a name and future format and send suggestions to the VRD list serve or directly to Sarah or Spruill.
