I. Welcome and Introductions
Maryly Snow,
Incoming VRD Moderator, reported that Jenni Rodda, Current VRD
Moderator, is recovering nicely from surgery and was not able to
attend ARLIS/NA Banff. Therefore, Maryly served as Moderator for
both old business and new business. Maryly thanked Dan Nolting
(not present) and Sherman Clarke (and Jenni Rodda) for their
contributions maintaining the VRD website and VRD listserv
respectively.
Sarah
Goldstein, Visual Resources Librarian, Vassar College, will
serve as vice moderator/moderator elect.
Spruill
Harder, Slides and Digital Images and Photographs Public
Services Librarian, Fine Arts Library, Harvard University, will
serve as co-vice moderator.
Please see
the VRD website
http://personal.chatham.edu/staff/dnolting/ to sign up for
the VRD list serve.
II. Old Business
1.
North American Lantern Slide Survey – the purpose of the
survey is to learn if there are special collections which would
be appropriate for digital projects; which images are in the
public domain; and perhaps to learn from the issues regarding
moving from analog to digital collection. The survey was
originally planned with two phases: Phase I- data collection;
Phase II-review results, update responses based on what you
learned about your collection from the other results. However,
the original survey was not implemented with appropriate
functionality to allow the sort of review and updating the
survey designers (Maryly Snow, Jenni Rodda) intended. Therefore,
the data was extracted from one program and installed in an
Excel spreadsheet. A review of the data in the Excel format also
revealed that a good portion of the data had been scrambled.
ACTION:
Maryly will have the Excel data added to the VRD website for
review and revision.
2.
Status of electronic discussion – While there is a need
for the listserv to keep members informed, it was agreed that
our listserv was underutilized. In addition, email is not the
best form of communication for interactive group work. A more
interactive process is needed for collaborative projects such as
the history of the VR profession. Carol Ann Fabian suggested
that a wiki would be an appropriate electronic forum for
projects. Eileen Fry suggested using BJ Irvine’s original
research for her book, Slide Libraries, could be part of
that history. Information that could be included in the history
of our profession website:
-
Time
line of media and developments, using John Hopkins
University’s timeline software
-
John
Hopkins University’s map software for BJ’s research travels
-
Classification schemes development
-
Biographical info – BJ, Tansey, others
-
Images
of slide libraries
-
Lantern
slide history
ACTION:
Spruill will work with Maryly to establish a wiki for history of
VR profession. (A wiki about slide libraries was already
established on Wikipedia, Maryly and Spruill have been adding to
it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_library.) Mark Pompelia
will look into VRA archives to see if there is information that
will be helpful for this project. Eileen Fry will ask Sarah
Carter to scan first chapter of BJ’s book. Working group: Mark
Pompelia, Megan Battey, Maryly Snow, Ann Whiteside, Eileen Fry,
Elizabeth Schaub, Spruill Harder.
3.
Trudie Jacoby: The ARLIS Standards committee put together
a Digital Image Database Standards Checklist (DIDSC).
The DIDSC
“may be used as a guide to determine whether a particular
electronic image product is appropriate for your library,
campus, museum, or other institution. Although designed to
evaluate image databases that are content repositories with
asset management and presentation functionalities, portions of
the checklist may be used independently to assess products with
fewer capabilities. The DIDSC itself may be modified, expanded,
or augmented to accommodate local needs; institutions are
encouraged to tailor this document to suit individual
application. “
See the
committee web site for links to the checklist. Provide Donald
Juedes (djuedes@jhu.edu)
with comments.
4.
Eileen – The 3rd summer of SEI will be held at Reed
College in Oregon June 11-16, 2006. The course is fully enrolled
with a wait-list. Eileen Fry and Amy Lucker are working on
long-term goals for addressing core competencies for SEI.
III. New Business
1.
ARLIS Professional Development Committee (PDC) will
update the Core Competencies every two years. Currently focusing
on intergrading VR into the document. Angel Moyes is the PDC
liaison to VRD and will contact Spruill and Sarah when ready for
review.
2.
Cataloging Cultural Object is slated to be published by
American Library Association late June, 2006. Mark Pompelia
proposed a series of events focusing on CCO: a pre-conference
workshop for ARLIS/NA about the early impact COO – a workshop on
how to implement Core 4 and CCO with real cataloging
applications (i.e., IRIS) - a “Best Practice” type talk.
ACTION:
Mark Pompelia and Linda McRae will develop idea for a
triumvirate on CCO: a workshop, a session, and something more
informal, like an AskARLIS or poster session.
IV. Incoming President Visit
